What
Howto Program a repeater for the Polycom Kirk KWS300 - Single Cell
Problem
I needed to extend the coverage for the KWS300 signal, but using another KWS300 doesn't do roaming of the active calls, so the only option was to extend it with a repeater.
Solution
Before you install a repeater you should be aware of the following Repeater facts:
- A maximum of three repeaters can be connected in a chain.
- Repeaters provide up to two or four channels speech channels depending on the type of repeater.
- KIRK Repeaters have to overlap the coverage of the KWS500, KWS1500, KWS2500 & KWS8000 Base Station for the system to work properly.
- KIRK Repeaters must be within a 25db drop of each other or base station of a KWS300, KWS600ip/v3 & KWS6000 for the repeaters / system to work properly.
- Remote sites up to 1 Km (in line of sight) from the main site can be incorporated into the system by means of a wireless KIRK Repeater equipped with an optional external antenna amplifying the received signal KIRK Repeater or Base Station it is logged on to.
- The KWS300 system is a single cell system and the same rules for the repeater installation can be applied to other single cell systems eg) KWS500, KWS600ip, KWS600v3 single cell.
- The KWS8000 system is a multi cell system and the same rules for the repeater installation can be applied to other multi cell systems eg) KWS2500 KWS6000 KWS600ip, KWS600v3 multi cell, KWS3000, KWS1500ip, KWS1500 qsig.
- You can only connect 3 repeaters to multi cell base. So if you have 2 bases in a multi cell system the maximum repeaters you can use is 6 - 3 per base.
Prior to installing a repeater you will need:
- A Full site survey must have been completed before installing the repeaters. See the Survey Document for instructions on how to complete a site survey.
- A Laptop or PC with the latest Service Tool application loaded, The latest version of Service Tool can be downloaded from:
- A Repeater Programming Tool & Repeater Power Supply
Download here
- Connect the Repeater Programming lead to the Serial Port on the PC or Laptop on which the latest Service Tool is installed.
- Connect the Programing Tool into the Repeater & connect the power supply into the Tool. The repeater will be flashing RED LED if it is not subscribed currently.
- NOTE do not connect the serial lead to the splitter until the repeater has powered up. Once it has powered up connect the Serial / Data lead into the Programing Tool.
- Run the Service Tool Application from Start / Programs / Kirk Tool
- Click on the Communications Tab set the Com Port connected to the Repeater (Usually Com Port 1) and click on the button Set Comport.
- Click on the Repeater Tab
- In the Octal field enter the ARI number of the System. This is the system S/N number & can often be found on the back of the system and see as part of the subscription process for handsets. You'll find the ARI number in the webportal of theKWS300
- In the Base Station to Synchronise on field enter the Number of the Base Station or radio part number (other repeater) that this repeater will extend the coverage of or if in a series of repeaters enter the repeater number that is closest to the location of the next repeater.
- In the Repeater Number box enter the Number of this Repeater - this must be a unique number & for Multi cell systems like the KWS8000 or KWS6000 repeaters should be numbered 64 more than the repeater you are syncing from. So, if you are syncing from base 10 your repeater number would be 74.
- Once all data is present Click on Write to Repeater.
- Click New(1) to clear the fields & then click on Read from Repeater(2) to check that the values have been correctly set.
